Making Coffee at home has never been easier.
It used to be kind of hard to make different kinds of coffee. Sure, it was easy to open a jar of instant coffee or to brew up a percolator of filter coffee – but making other kinds of coffee was something we couldn’t do easily at home. Nowadays, however, it’s real easy to buy all kinds of coffee makers that can make all kinds of coffee – and these coffee makers have never been more affordable. So, let’s take a look at the types of coffee you can make at home now that technology has given you a helping hand.

Americano – an Americano is basically just a shot of Espresso that is topped up to about the levels of a standard cup of coffee with hot water. You can drink this with or without milk.

Café Au Lait – in general terms a Café Au Lait is a split between regular filter coffee and milk usually in 50/50 proportions.

Caffe Lungo – also known as a long Espresso a Lungo is basically a diluted Espresso so you get a larger cup of coffee and less of an instant caffeine hit.

Cappuccino – a Capuccino is a mix of Espresso, steamed milk and milk that has been frothed to a frenzy! You can make your Cappuccino as strong or as weak as you like by adjusting the number of Espresso shots in the cup. In general terms the standard cup here will work on an espresso, steamed milk, frothed milk ratio of 1:1:1. Don’t forget the chocolate and/or cinnamon on top as well!

Caramel Macchiato – a Caramel Macchiato is a Macchiato with a shot of caramel syrup added to it – it’s toffee coffee! Simply make a Macchiato taking a shot or two of Espresso and add the syrup and some milk. Whipped cream and caramel syrup on top is optional!

Espresso – an Espresso is the Daddy of all coffees! You’ll need some form of espresso maker to make this kind of cup properly. So, you’ll need either a manual stove-top Espresso maker or a full sized machine that is designed to produce the kind of intense shot you’ll want here. The basic principle is that a lot of very hot water is forced through a small amount of coffee to produce a small shot of coffee to drink.
So, we’ve reached the end of Part One of our A to Z – don’t forget to check out the rest of the coffee alphabet!

Coffee, what would a day be without it? I go to bed at night thinking about that first cup of coffee in the morning. It amazes me how each morning, I find the coffee, grind it, pour the water through the machine and make it back to bed for another 10 minutes all with my eyes still closed, and all without incident. One thing I have learned in the past few years is that choking down a bitter cup of coffee just for the caffeine fix is not worth it. After experiencing a rich full body coffee treat for a number of days and then returning to the old discount brand made me aware of how invaluable this bean was to me. I have since experimented with a number of unique blends, switching month to month just to add a little pizzazz to my otherwise mundane mornings. I am always in search of new coffee to try...
If you have discovered the PERFECT coffee to start your day I would love to know about it.
